food for the soul

Carol Ann Duffy
Valentine

Not a red rose or a satin heart.

I give you an onion.
It is a moon wrapped in brown paper.
It promises light
like the careful undressing of love.

Here.
It will blind you with tears
like a lover.
It will make your reflection
a wobbling photo of grief.

I am trying to be truthful.

Not a cute card or kissogram.

I give you an onion.
Its fierce kiss will stay on your lips,
possessive and faithful
as we are,
for as long as we are.

Take it.
Its platinum loops shrink to a wedding ring,
if you like.
Lethal.
Its scent will cling to your fingers,
cling to your knife.

Well, well, well. How did someone like you end up with the least common personality type of them all? In a group of 100 Americans, only 0.5 others would be just like you. You really are one of a kind… In fact, I do believe that that’s one of the definitions for the word “FREAK.”

Freak’s not such a bad word to describe you actually.

You are deep, complex, secretive and extremely difficult to understand. If that doesn’t scream “Freak!” I don’t know what does. No-one actually knows the REAL you, do they?

You probably have deep interests in creative expression as well as issues of spirituality and human development.

You’ve probably even been called a “psychic” before, because of your uncanny knack to understand and “read” people without quite knowing how you do it. Don’t fret. You’re not actually psychic. That would make you special and you’ll never accomplish that.

You’re also quite possible the most emotional of them all, so don’t take this all too hard. Nevertheless you most definitely have the strangest personality type and that’s not necessarily a good thing.

The sound of squawking or “Mammy why is that lady wearing a coffin dress ?”

Having made my children endure Guys and Dolls and Charlie and the chocolate factory on the 25th
with me squawking along there was an encore today.

They wanted to spend some time playing with me and I said sure after I get the washing done,
and they tidied thier room we could spend the afternoon sprawled in the sitting room.

This also ment the sitting room had to be sorted, tidied, decluttered and have all rubbish removed.

You would never guess it was prestine on the 24th, floor washed, sofa pulled apart and hoovered, everything polished, everything tidied, a mere two days later and a whole black sack of stuff was pulled out of it and into the bin. Ok a lot of that was boxes and card and plastic from all the presents but still, the mind boggles.

The sitting room during the day when the kids are off school is thiers basically.
I have comfy sofa at the end of my kitchen to curl up and read on and listen to music, I don’t watch tv during the day unless it is certain cartoons with the kids ( x-men, teen titian, static shock, batman ect) or do I play the consoles unless we are playing together ( starwars lego, puyo pop, crash team racing, mirco machines ). When they are in school it doesn’t get too messy and it is easy to straigthen out when they are in bed if I want to play more adult games or watch something on the tv, but when they are off school the place can become a war zone in a matter of hours.

But I won’t watch cartoons or play the xbox or watch a movie or let them paint or play games with them if the room is messy; which is a wonderful rule to have in place.

So the room was made mammy ready and all the presents but back under the tree and then we settled down to play cards, lego, do some colouring in, eat a lot of bickies and quality street chocolates and a large pot of tea and to watch the sound of music with the tellytext subtitles on so we could sing along.

Now they know “do a deer, a female deer” and “rain drops on roses..” from me singing them and can and will singing them on thier own but they have never been old enough to sit and watch the movie and retain any of it;
but this time they watched caught up in the story of the Van Trapp children and were singing along.

My daughter also saw for the first time a nun in the full black habit and veil and then asked
“Mammy why is that lady wearing a coffin dress ?”
the lines the veil formed about the nun to her mind looked like a coffin. So we had a talk about nuns and monks and I realised that for me nuns were a common enough sight and I am old enough to have had nuns teaching me in school in the old style habits but the only nun they know of is a rahter elderly sister that comes to thier school and she does not have a viel or habit.

My son was more intrested in trying to figure out ways to catch a cloud and pin it down, keep a wave upon the sand, hold a moonbeam in your hand and making notes of his ideas.

I also infliced seven brides for seven brothers and bedknobs and broomsticks on them over the last few days 🙂 musicals and thier appreication shall not die out, now to get a copy of clamity jane….

I just blew in from the windy city…

Fog, Guinness and Soap.

I woke to the news that “the cul de sac has disappeared” announced solemnly by my six year old, this was followed by the enquiry if it would be back and it was “missing in the mists”.

Getting them prepped and out the door too school was delayed by the sad clouds, “Well they must be sad” concluded the 8 year old “as they were down and not up in the sky where they should be”.

They kept checking on the fog and wondering did they need to wrap up extra warm, would they need a torch, would a rope to hold on be helpful in the eventuality the fog got bigger; all of which I listened to grinning while making thier lunches and considering how such practical thinking would serve them well when playing rpgs in year to come.

Extra care was taken on what now was the adventure in the mists as we might go missing to and end up somewhere else and maybe the school was missing as well. They were happy enough to find the school and I was told to be careful and go straight home.

I did but not for long as I had a long day ahead of me questing for many items.

Basically shopping and I despise shopping and after the first part of the adventure it was easier to keep in that mind set and be questing for items then squandering money taking part in the annual gift giving season;

Also it was shopping in the city centre and given the perils of that this time of year being prepared and

Working out the best route made a lot of sense.

Having gotten all the items that were in establishments in the north of the city a break was needed for me and my companion for the day. Indeed it had been a day with out quarrel, disagreement or any interpersonal angst which was miraculous considering. We took our repose in an imbibing emporium along side the river, not much to look at from the outside but its size and comforts belies its frontage.

Its secrets are known to me, my father and my grandfather, indeed it was in there my father first laid eyes on my mother. The blue haze of smoke is gone from the place, but the welcome and indeed the pint of the black stuff has not changed.

Recovered, regrouped and with the baggage reorganised we sallied forth once more renewed.

Soon we were to brave the cavern of smells hoping to acquire gifts before our senses were over whelmed.

We battled past the pretty parcelled presents pile up inside the portal, past other seeking shoppers who’s sense had already been over whelmed and wandered from side to side enthralled by the sparkles and bright colours letting themselves but helped by the hobgoblins of hindrance who had doubled thier numbers for the festive season.

The hobgoblins maze their victims with facts and gentle hand waving motions all designed to waft more of the smell towards the shoppers who lulled by their hushed tones into relaxing and breathing deeply.

This would not work on me and I sorely wanted not to be delayed so that the odorous of the cavern did not take hold for al the hobgoblin would achieve would be a face full of nose bile as my allergies would kick in to save me. Taking shallow breaths and refusing any help and refuting the hindrance hobgoblins instance that I needed any I complete the extraction with time to spare. My companion had decided to stay outside and peered through the window while fiddling with a harmonica reminding me of a

Long forgotten entertainments where adventurers would try to attempts such feats of skill for gains that were shiny.

In this case the time gained ment that the swift transport could be taken,

getting us home with our spoils, ensuring the leisure to secrete them about the house.

There are trace smells of the cavern in the house put the precautions are put in place,

Some of the items we sought were just for this purpose and those incenses ward off

Those odours that should delight others when they are gifted with them.

In all a day well spent and when the children were retrieved we all retired home knowing there were only 3 more sleeps until Winter solstice and 5 more until Christmas.

They had been busy on a side quest of their own the gathering and preparations of items to create a festive food and under the guidance of there grandmother gained skills and knowledge.

Tomorrow the mists may have lifted but we will continue on our task to have the most enjoyable solar return celebrations.

:(

Words like violence
Break the silence
Come crashing in
Into my little world
Painful to me
Pierce right through me
Cant you understand
Oh my little girl

All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm

Vows are spoken
To be broken
Feelings are intense
Words are trivial
Pleasures remain
So does the pain
Words are meaningless
And forgettable

All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm

Enjoy the silence

the forbidden music

The children have left the building, the children have left the building !

They are gone for the weekend, I can play the forbidden music.

The ones that I can’t play due to little ears who love to increase there vocab inventivly as possible
with rude words, really they way they can use knickers is somthing to here.

I shall begin with G’F’N’R and then then see I can shake the dust dust off.

I love my kids and while I don’t agree that they put a huge crimp in my life some times it is nice to have me adult space.
Oooh I might even have pizza for breakfast.

gifts ?

Gifts come in many shapes and forms and sizes.

They can range from peace of mind, to just what you always wanted, to what you needed, what you never knew you needed; they can be tangible or intangible.

I unexpectedly got given on this evening a gift.
To most it would not even be a gift, but what it means to me and what it has done is beyound measure.
It was an image file of a photo that I had forgetten was even taken.

What makes it so remarkible is that I can not find anything wrong with it.
Every photo I have ever seen of me I have disliked for at least 3 or 4 reasons.
Hell I have the top seven reasons I hate the way I look in photos and I hit 4 to 7 on a regular basis.
I don’t share what they are for the most part with anyone, people don’t see what I see.
I made peace ages ago that I am not photogenic, I am not pretty, I may be on ocassion charismatic but cameras don’t capture that.
A still life Jan does not work.

And then I got sent a pic of me and the only faults I can find are not with me but with the graininess or the dim light. Ok I know there is not a huge ammount of me in the pic ( be greatful for that trust me lol ) but what there is I can not find fault with.

This is for me very werid, what paralell dimension did I sidestep into ? or what has gone wrong with my brain.
I am still trying to puzzle that bit out but there it is, it exists a picture of me I don’t wince, frown, roll my eyes at, or sigh at. Are you scared yet ? cos I think I am.

This may take a while to process. Things may not be the same, things have changed.
Is there a better gift ? esp when the person who took it and sent it on to me had no idea of the impact it might and indeed has had.
Boggle ! Right I am going to bed maybe this was a dream or nightmare I can’t decide.

Come away oh human childe…

Torchwood esp5,
finally one that did not set my eyes rolling or left to many niggles for me to look back and say I enjoyed it.

Ok Cyberwoman verse petreadon has it’s nerd cheese points,
the device for seeing/feeling into the past was intresting but still the encounters did not to my mind redeem Doctor Owen Harper.
Honestly it is the need to know more about Jack that makes me watch more then anything else.
If there was a Jack book that would answer most of the questions and fill in his story I would consider reading it and givng the show a miss.

O M G !

NORTHAMPTON writer Alan Moore is to feature in a forthcoming episode of The Simpsons.

Moore, aged 53, recorded his lines at The Lodge studios in Abington Square last month for an episode which will be called Husbands and Knives.
The Simpsons’ production team are long-time fans of Moore’s, whose reputation in the world of graphic novels is legendary.
A chance meeting with his fiancée Melinda Gebbie got the project rolling.
Mr Moore said: “Mel was in America promoting our new book The Lost Girls and one of the Simpsons producers spoke to her and asked if I would be in the show.
“She said: ‘Why don’t you give him a ring he’s very approachable’. “I was happy to do it. I’m a big fan of The Simpsons.”
He features in a sub-plot which sees a new ‘cool’ comic shop opening in Springfield in competition with the Android’s Dungeon, run by Comic Book Guy who is voiced by Hank Azaria.
The new shop has persuaded Moore to make a public appearance. In reality, Mr Moore rarely makes publicity appearances, preferring to concentrate on his prolific output of work.
This has earned him a reputation in America as a recluse although in Northampton he has a wide network of long-time friends and family.
Mr Moore’s latest work, The Lost Girls, has garnered rave reviews around the world although it is not due to be published in the UK until 2008 due to a legal dispute with Great Ormond Street Hospital.
The Lost Girls features elements of the Peter Pan tale, which Great Ormond Street owns the rights to and he has agreed to delay publication while Great Ormond Street promotes its own sequel to JM Barrie’s original, Peter Pan in Scarlet.
Mr Moore also wrote The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, V for Vendetta, From Hell and Constantine, which were all made into Hollywood movies.
The Watchmen, a tale of dysfunctional superheroes, cemented his reputation in the 1980s and was credited with opening up the graphic novel as a medium for adult stories.
